Grief Prevention
AUTOMATICALLY PREVENTS ALL FORMS OF GRIEF, including build/break, theft, spam, fire, spawn camping, lava dumping, chat trolling, advertising and more, so you don't have to undo any damage after the fact. It even teaches players how to use it so you don't have to! No configuration or database required. Stop responding to grief and prevent it instead. Grief Prevention will solve your grief problems without requiring you to manage a roster of trained administrators, juggle 10 different anti-grief plugins, take away cool standard game features, publish a training manual / tutorial for players, or add explanatory signs to your world. You can also choose to integrate PvP elements into build design to finally get a PvP experience befitting a sandbox game about creative building.
Grief Prevention stops grief before it starts automatically without any effort from administrators, and with very little (self service) effort from players. Solve all your grief problems with a single download, no database, and no configuration step.

Please Vote for Grief Prevention
I've also posted Grief Prevention on the Spigot site, where plugins are ranked based on reviews. If you love GP, please take a couple of minutes to give GP your rating and leave a short review. Better rating and positive reviews will help server owners who look for plugins on the Spigot site make the safe choice (GP) instead of downloading something sketchy or incomplete. :) Thanks so much for all your support!

Posted Apr 13, 2012hey big its been a looooong time :). Im back though, just had a question, how does a user enable/disable the "boundaries" overlay that shows you where your plots are. These are extremely useful but also ugly to look at when i dont need the info. I figured out i could click outside of the area with a string and it would go away... but wasn't sure if there was a slash command for enable/disable.
Also, will you please add a /gp help or something so that a list of user allowed commands come up. Along this same line where is the documentation for permission nodes? I only found 2 in your help pages for admins. griefprevention.spam and griefprevention.admin.* Surely there are others to allow certain things to certain groups.

Apologies, didn't mean to sound insulting. Just making sure I understand. You removed all the files from GriefPreventionData\ClaimsData, then did a /reload, and there were still claims?

I'm aware of how to work with plugins.... I restarted the server after each alteration. Even with every data file referencing that specific world was removed, it continued to say there was a claim there. The Dynmap wasn't showing anything, and the info tool wasn't either. Only after deleting the plugin and data entirely, and installing it fresh did it fix. To double check, I added the data files back in, and was receiving the same issue. Is it possible that a data file was somehow loaded for a different world?

You shouldn't need Lockette, since chests are automatically protected inside land claims. But if you really want it, you can simply install both. Optionally, you can set GriefPrevention's "allow theft" to true, which would then make chests unsafe unless they were locked with a sign.
@RemyPas
There's no complicated permissions to worry about. Players actually can't buy/sell land, because this isn't a land management plugin. But I do know there's at least one guy currently working on an extension plugin which will add that feature. If you REALLY want to require a permission for claiming land, then there's a config variable for that. But by default, it's not required so everyone can claim land.
Yes, it's supposed to be easy for players and for admins. :) I'm glad you think it is.
@OneYankeeRebel
If you try to overlap a claim with a new one, the existing claim will be highlighted in red.
No one has reported any problem with players circumventing, working around, or otherwise defeating GP's container protection.
@rockingoutloud
If you delete or edit data files, you need to /reload or stop/start your server to get the effect.
@limdingwen
No, you can't customize the items (golden shovel, string). I know that in some cases, it conflicts with other plugins, but there's a giant benefit in making them not customizable, because anyone can watch any youtube video demo or ready any instructions written by anyone, and those details will be correct.
Yes, gold takes a short while to find, longer for inexperienced players. But every player gets an automatic small claim when he places his first chest, which is enough to protect his starter house while he goes looking for gold. The trouble with making the golden shovel easy to get is that it puts that tool in the hands of griefers, who are typically not patient enough to invest in griefing and instead just go somewhere else.

There's currently no way to change the item used for claiming. Gold shovel is perfect, and it's NOT hard at all to find gold ore. Maybe have a starter kit for all users which includes a gold shovel? And remember, placing your first chest after installing GP will create a claim around the chest as well.

Posted Apr 12, 2012Ok, before I test it out, is there a way to change the item used for the claiming and checking? I am hosting a 'private' server so I use GP to prevent them from griefing and flaming one another, but we would also like to progress to building more things quickly instead of trying to mine for gold when only protecting our hut. It takes quite a long time that others get impatient and does something else (we don't have much time to play MC).

The moment a user equip's a golden shovel, it will print a blurb that tells them how many claim blocks they have available, and also informs the user to watch the youtube vid for a demonstration on how to use. It's quite elegant, tbh.

Thanks for the reply and the explanation. I'm only implying the plugin on my survival worlds. The 'creative' spawnworld will be managed with the 'old' Hawk/Worldguard system. GP will solve a lot of arguments about stealing in 'safe zones' in my survival worlds since my players will be able to make them themselves. I have protected my 'spawn city' in survival world with worldguard. My players can't build there. So they can claim it as much as they want. But that would be pointless ;)
Thanks again for the offer to PM you. I'll be sure to do it when I run into issues.
One question remains. How does a player check how much available claim blocks he/she has? I know it just gives you the amount when you try to claim a piece of land that's to big. But is there a command for it?

(I'm from the same server as @OneYankeeRebel ) What's odd, is I went into the data folder, and removed every claim in the world. It still says there is a claim there when I try to make a claim, but it's not even there on the Dynmap GP.

By default, permissions are not required. In fact, in my experience, the permissions do more harm than good, since BigScary already has a logical set of built in default permissions. You'll obviously want to give the griefprevention.admin.* or other fine-grain permissions for your admins and staff, but default users should not require permissions unless you are trying to BLOCK access to certain features (which shouldn't be necessary).
And yes, for a survival server, GP just can't be beat. I run multiple worlds for survival, creative, events, pvp, etc. and I have been able to successfully and logically implement GP into all of them. Once we get a Real Estate extension together it really will be the be-all, end-all for protection.
Also I can relate to your situation as I also made the switch on a fairly large-scope server with multiple protection systems to GP. As always there is going to be a learning curve for your users, but not nearly as complex as let's say Residence or WorldGuard. If you're users have been using Factions or Towny in the past the concept of making square claims may go a bit over their heads at first but have faith, they will learn.
As far as your preparation goes. Step ONE, before you do anything else, is to protect any server infrastructure (spawn, major cities/towns, shops) and any of your own builds ASAP to avoid other people claiming them.
Feel free to PM me if you have any GP questions as I am about a month into our migration and have learned quite a bit of tricks to using GP.

I think the issue is sometimes GP will not "overlay" the overlapping claim markers properly. Sometimes they are underground. I have this one area in my world I could have sworn was never claimed, but I tried to add a claim to it and it said it overlapped. I could visually see the lava/netherrack but instead of it being on the ground, it was ALL over the place. Like the dotted line of the side would go up and down and up and down. I tried using a string to see whose claim it was and it said no claim was there, EVEN THOUGH i could see this claim's markers. Was bizarre. Thankfully that area of our world is now off limits and I haven't encountered that problem since then.
However I do think it would be nice to have a few more user-friendly features for displaying and troubleshooting conflicting claims, since that seems to be the best part of GP, is the small learning curve.
I've been mucking around with the API this week and made a few cool discoveries I was going to tackle the Real Estate extension but I see there's already a project for that and I'm still a little confused about economy/vault integration.

Lockette is apparently easy to get around, seems all the evil hacked mods have ability to open chests locked with lockette.
I watched it happen on a server, they opened my chests, defeating lockette. They don't seem to be able to do it to lwc.
I do hope GriefPrevention doesn't end up like that.

Posted Apr 11, 2012Hello, we love this plugin, I have a suggestion, forgive me if it's been said before.
1) Admins need a way to see whose claim is being overlapped when a player is attempting a claim. I have run around hitting every block trying to find it and can not.
Maybe when an admin attempts to claim the same area the player is claiming, it will announce whose claim is being overlapped.
Or... is it possible the claims just mess up? Conflict with chest and sign protections?

Posted Apr 11, 2012I'm getting this plugin on my server, as I stated earlier. I'm setting it up so my new survival world will use it as of this Friday.
I have been preparing this thoroughly and read all documentation.
Just one more questions. It doesn't require me to add permissions for players? Not even to buy or sell land?
I found some admin permissions. I understand and will implement. But no mention of permissions for other players.
Am I missing something?
If not. Wow! Easy ;)
