Turrets
Turrets
Automatic turrets for Bukkit servers (cleverly disguised as minecarts!)
I moved the project into Beta as there have been more people downloading and, I'm assuming, testing it, with no major issues. There is a lot going on in this plugin, and little changes can have far reaching consequences, let alone big changes, so I still won't stake my name on saying it absolutely won't mess anything on your server up. Please report any problems you have!
Currently working on: DisguiseCraft support. Give me your ideas on what you'd want from this :)
Details: I'm hooked into DisguiseCraft, just need ideas for what kind of features are desirable!
Download
I'll try and keep this up-to-date. If all goes as planned, this version should be the same or newer than the one linked to this BukkitDev entry.
A Jenkins job has been created to house dev builds. You can access it here!
v0.2.3a - Manual turret control!
For those of you antsy about getting a version for 1.4.4, here's an unofficial 1.4.4 dev build.

Building turrets is easy: Just place a fence post, then right click with a minecart on top. It's so easy, even a guest could do it! (That's why Turrets has permissions support.)
Make sure you attach an ammo chest to the turret (see command page) or set turrets to have unlimited ammo (see config page).
Breaking turrets is also easy: Just left-click it until it breaks, just like a minecart.
Features
- Turrets target hostile mobs
- Turrets will avoid shooting through walls
- Turrets use ammo chests (configurable).
- Turrets are upgradable!
- Upgrade a turret by replacing the block under its fence post: iron -> gold -> diamond
- Better turrets can shoot faster, farther, more accurately
- Firing speed, range, and accuracy can be changed in the configuration
- Turrets are breakable! (With permissions, of course)
Possible future features
Commands
Permission Nodes
Also, thanks to damnnicholas for his YouTube video explaining the plugin.

Posted Oct 20, 2012I have stepped down as author of Turrets and given wristdirect the roles of Author and Maintainer. I understand how much interest this plugin has generated, and hope that wristdirect will be able to satisfy your expectations in my absence.
I have lost my interest in Minecraft, and will be unable to continue development of Turrets.

Posted Oct 19, 2012Ok, so it's still a little shaky, but here's the new version of Turrets with those new features. Link Removed: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?4gvqwn1a6701rv5
Notes on how to do things:
Linking chests to turrets
The chest must be in the 8-member neighborhood of the turret, on the same y-level as the post of the turret. You make any chest-turret link that follows that rule, and chests can be linked to multiple turrets (like if you had 4 turrets surround one chest, they could all be linked to it, or only 3, or whatever).
You then type "/turrets addAmmoBox", click the turret to link, then the chest to link
Removing chest from turret ammo
Must be linked to the turret. Type "/turrets removeAmmoBox", click the turret to unlink, then the chest.
Setting the ammo type of a turret
By default, newly created turrets require a linked chest that has ammo in order to fire. To change a turret's ammo type to unlimited (no chest ammo required), type "/turrets setAmmoType unlimited".
To change a turret's ammo type to use linked chest ammo, type "/turrets setAmmoType useAmmoBox".
Note that turrets with unlimited ammo can still have chests attached to them, they just won't require/use the ammo.
You can also cancel any of those commands before they are finished (clicking the required blocks) by typing "/turrets cancel"
You can also reload the turrets of the server by using "/turrets reload". If turrets aren't spawning right on join/startup for some reason, use this command.
Still very alpha/beta-like. Needs testing before you go using it on your important server ;)

Posted Oct 19, 2012Okay, so a little update here.
I still need to flesh out a couple things before I release this new (very Beta-ee) release of Turrets, but here's what I've added so far:
-Turrets will actually be remembered after a server is shutdown and restarted. (note: Sometimes turrets don't completely load, a lot like how sometimes Citizens citizens won't always load. So, like in Citizens, I made a reload command just for Turrets. I'm not sure why this happens, but this is the stop-gap for now.)
-Added "/turrets reload", which reloads only the Turrets plugin. This is in case some turrets don't correctly spawn on server start up or when a player joins.
-Added manual firing control of a turret if you enter it. Doubles the firing rate when a player is inside. Currently anyone can man any turret.
-Added "/turrets addAmmoChest", which will attach an adjacent chest (chest must be adjacent to fence post of turret, or for a doublechest, one half must be) to the turret for ammo. I currently haven't actually added the need for turrets to use said ammo. Note that if you add another chest to a single ammo chest, it will correctly make it a double ammo chest. Also note that turrets will share ammo chests if the chest is adjacent to both.
Still needed before I put out the new version:
-Removal of ammo chests when the chest is destroyed (or via command from a player).
-Add option to make turret use ammo. My plan is for the default to be it needs ammo from at least one attached ammo chest, with the option via command for it to be unlimited ammo.
-Put locations of ammo chests into turrets.yml to keep them after server shutdown.
That said, is anyone still watching to see if this is updated? If you are, lemme know here, or if not, I may need to look into making a new plugin entry on BukkitDev so this thing gets visibility again.

Posted Oct 17, 2012So I recompiled Turrets with all the new dependencies. It seems to work okay (I tested it really quickly). Here you go guys :) Link Removed: http://www.mediafire.com/?dn35c4kptvewqu1
P.S. I by no means understand all the ins and outs of this plugin, though it's cool enough that I may learn how just how it works so I can develop it more.
note: I branched off of the mainline in the repositories and uploaded the version I linked here. Still awaiting approval though

Posted Sep 12, 2012A few Ideas, even if this seems abandoned:
First of all, there should be an activation command for turrets. There could be several levels of permission to use this "activation command". One that prevents you from doing it completely, (for guests) one that lets you use it at the cost of a dispenser, or a bow, (for users) and one that lets you do it completely free (for admins). Furthermore they could shot more than arrows, and of course shoot at more than mobs. They should also have some sort of inventory or limitation, in case you want it to shoot potions or something, but not upset the balance of the server by mass-duplicating potion of health and swiftness. My suggestion is that in order for one to shoot more "advenced" projectiles, it would require a remote connection to a power source of some kind. The possiblites get endless if you start thinking of individual command-based configuration, permission-based player targeting and power supply-networks, so I'll stop talking and leave the rest to the imagination of the author.

Posted Aug 28, 2012idk the rules and such on this but maybe someone can pick this up? This plugin was great and really had promise if only the author kept up with it. But seems to have been forgotten or abandoned and that is sad... Please someone take this on!

Posted Aug 19, 2012Well this plugin is probably inactive now, but I'll just give a suggestion anyway:
A bug states that you can ride the turrets.
Well, how about that if you ride turrets (and provided that you are the owner of the turret), you gain manual control of the turret (left click to shoot and such).

This plugin is under heavy development. The first release is mainly to keep me interested in this project
My guess is he/she wont be back for a while or at all. They already showed an inability to stick with things for the fact alone they needed to post what they had to stay interested.
Although this might go somewhere for the fact this is a really great idea, he/she is going to have a hard time building a user base if they are inactive this much with out answering the public questions and such.

Posted Aug 16, 2012I installed it, the Turrets folder appeared in /Plugins. Now i place the fence and the minecart on top of it. Then minecraft falls down through the fence and it doesn't shoot at all.(The plugin says that turret is created.)

As a PvE server, having a turret infinite ammo is too overpowered. If turrets are neglected and their ammunition runs out, they should stop functioning and thus mobs destroying them. But yes I guess having an option for that is fine.
I was thinking about MagicSpells when commenting about more types of ammunition, as MagicSpells can provide different effects for each type of "ammunition", for example, flame bullets, or stunning bullets, or exploding bullets, etc.
