Plugin: TrainCarts - Linked Minecarts, sign-redstone systems, easy to use and realistic
Version: v1.73.0
Build: 1.7.2 R0.1/R0.2
Incompatible with: RailCraft
Description
This plugin looks for suitable Minecarts and links them together if possible. When two Minecarts are being "linked", the Minecarts will act as one single moving train.
Once carts are successfully linked, an effect is played and their velocity is shared in combination with an individual factor for each Minecart, which is used to remain a steady gap between carts. This gap is adjustable, the force at which this happens as well.
End result: a train! You can move it, make a roller-coaster out of it, split it in half, watch trains collide, whatever you want to do with trains. :)
As for 1.21, it is also possible to safely exit your train by setting an exit offset with a (sideways) push factor for the train. This feature is disabled by default. (only affects dropped items). If you want to display arrival times on signs (see redstone circuit part) you need SignLink, see the downloads on the bottom of the page.
As for 1.35 you can set train properties to make 'special' trains, or to 'finalize' a train

Links
For configuration, permissions and how-to's, see the Wikipedia page (it is rather long):
Note that I would prefer having comments, bug reports and others in the main Bukkit page, since I visit that site the most. :)
Addons
Special Addons for TrainCarts
Features
- Link minecarts using collision: no commands needed to make a train
- Move trains as easily as you would with single Minecarts
- Store trains to file for persistence during reloads and server restarts
- Use sign-redstone circuits for subway systems, complete railroads and much more
- Station to gracefully stop and launch trains
- Spawn
- Teleport
- Property setters
- Tag systems to switch certain tracks based on tags on the train
- Destination systems to make your train travel to far-away lands all on it's own
- Supports Minecart Mania's features
- Infinite minecart speeds are possible
- Push-away: Push mobs, players and items away from your trains to keep them running
- Everything is configurable, if something proves not to be, I will make it that way
FAQ
When players are near, trains reach their destinations. With no one near, they don't. What do I do?
By default trains do not keep chunks loaded, and they will unload once they move into unloaded chunks. To make trains keep the chunk area (and themselves) around them loaded, set the 'keepchunksloaded' property to True. This can be done using the /train keepchunksloaded true command, using a property sign or by changing it to true in the DefaultTrainProperties.yml file. For more information about train properties, see here.
Why not boats?!?!
Incompatibilities
If you have another plugin that performs similar Minecart replacement techniques, it is likely that TrainCarts will not function or function poorly. For the 'chunk persistence' part of this plugin, other plugins that unload chunks without firing events result in this feature failing. Minebackup is known for having this problem.
Metrics
This plugin sends server count statistics to MCStats.org. You can (globally) opt out in the PluginMetrics/config.yml file.

Posted Dec 14, 2012Wow, that really IS good news, thanks rcth! We also have a candidate to continue work on TrainCarts on our server, but he's pretty busy guy atm. But maybe both can contribute - or even more, who can say? This is Open Source, after all.

Posted Dec 14, 2012I will try to keep TrainCarts updated. I will NOT, I repeat, I will NOT let my server stop. TrainCarts in combinating with WirelessRedstone is the core of my server. So if one of them isn't availible, it would die.
I hope I can get this updated.

I had trainticket one time, but I couldn't configure it to work correctly. The permissions file needs to be changed depending on if you are an Admin, OP or player.
In the config file, check to see if "destroy on exit" or something like that is set to true. If so, set it to false.
I think the trainticket page is a more appropriate place to get the answers to your questions.
In the meantime, I'm going to reinstall the plugin to see if I can get it working and report back on my findings.
At the moment, I am 99% sure that traincarts is not the issue.
good luck

If you are unsre which plugin cause the problem run a test server on your computer where you exclude one or the other.
Also the combination of the two might be the problem, not sure how trainticket works so.

Posted Dec 13, 2012I couldn't agree more on leagris's words. I myself as an experienced server admin am also feeling quite clueless - and helpless, too. Yes this is all open source, but my Java skills are no match to any skilled plugin developer here. The way it is, we have spent the last 5 weeks or so to renovate our whole metro railwork on our server to accommodate your brilliant plugin.
And now it seems it has all been in vain. The plugin as it stands cannot handle the pathfinding without crashing the server - ie. it is limping on one foot.
I am very afraid this will kill the fun from playing multiplayer Minecraft. Too many plugin devs have abandoned their good work.
I do not want to point to anyone - I am just feeling very sad and frustrated atm. I sincerely hope you will consider still doing the "one more version", where you promised to fix those issues...

Posted Dec 13, 2012Oups about you leaving,
Sad news for all of us, clueless server admins.
I read and understand your points. Somehow, I agree with you.
Though, I could have appreciated some clues about your mood before investing my time with yet another maybe useful plugin.
The most significant and important issue it raises here is: Running a CraftBukkit server with plugins, is full of Damocles blades hanging over admin heads over such situations as here.
Yes, this is stressful.
I thought you could have things change and evolve at CraftBukkit due to your fame and openness; Because you are known to have valid points and so many servers are using your plugins. Because you are one of the most active helper in the pluigin developer community.
Something is doomed: Minecart plugins raises half baked and are abandoned.
Though, I think this doom comes from a bigger root issue with Minecraft or even Mojang and decisions made last years. I won't expose my bets on these, but sure I have some quite informed about what's going wrong for us.
All this while trying to have fun providing a pleasant experience for my players.
Sorry, I am just feeling like a chicken facing a knife here.

Posted Dec 12, 2012I'm having a problem with the furnace carts while running a 1.4.5. server. What's happening is I can place the furnace cart down but when I feed them coal they don't ignite. It just takes my coal and when I break the cart I get it back (sometimes). I removed the plugin and furnace carts would ignite normally when placing coal in them.

Yes it does load in 1.4.5, what seems to be the problem?
Guys, seriously, please spend 10 minutes of your time to actually explain what is not working. Posts like yours, for example, do not help the plugin author at all.

Posted Dec 6, 2012For all those who complain about jerky minecarts: I finally concluded that this is due to the 1.4.5 client - so it is NOT the fault of TrainCarts, nor is it in any way related to the client mods used. Simply find a 1.4.4 client if you want to get rid of the jerkyness of the carts while driving.
I'm pretty sure the bug in 1.4.5 client is due to fixes in client for the torch particles...

Posted Dec 6, 2012poiNt3D, you're right, this is not the right place. The effect can be gotten rid of with a proper client mod combination, but I cannot share it here since I think sharing a modded client along with minecraft.jar is not exactly right thing to do. - - - And, it does not belong to this thread.
