Player Guide
NB: you can use /spellcraft to check your current mana and spells at any time.
Making an Altar
First, you need to build an altar (or use one that somebody else made). Here's a diagram (up = west):

Layer 4:

The bottom layer should be in the ground, so when it's complete it should be three blocks tall.
If you do it right, it'll look like this (sacrifice area is empty):
Sacrificing
Next, you can place block(s) in the middle part (the three air blocks in layer 2) and sacrifice them to get spells. To sacrifice, you place the blocks, stand three blocks east from the center (as seen in the video), and say 'sacrifice' (this phrase may vary on different servers, but 'sacrifice' is the default). Lightning should hit the altar, and the block(s) will be consumed. Your current spell of the right type will be set to whatever corresponds to what you put in; for example, sacrificing one netherrack would set your current block-targeting spell to fireball. The blocks that you sacrifice for each spell are listed in the Spells List, although different servers may have different sacrifices.
Getting Mana
Casting spells requires mana. The mana costs for each spell will vary from server to server, but getting mana is always the same: kill mobs. Whenever you kill a mob by hitting it or with any kind of projectile (setting it on fire, pushing it off an edge, or siccing your wolf on it won't work), you get mana equal to 10 times the xp it drops.
Casting Spells
How you cast a spell depends on what type of spell it is:
- For block-targeting spells, aim and right-click with a stick or a blaze rod. Some spells will require a blaze rod and cannot be cast with a stick; those spells say so in their description.
- For self-targeting spells, right-click with a feather.
- For short-range entity-targeting spells, right-click the entity with a wooden sword. You need to be within a few blocks of it.
- For long-range entity-targeting spells, hit the entity with a snowball.
