Spectate

What is spectate?
Spectate allows you to watch players from their point of view, simply by typing in /spectate (player). You will see exactly what they see, and they'll never know you were watching them.
You can also watch them from different angles. There's Third Person, Third Person Front (looking at their face), and Freeroam (you can walk freely around and watch them from any angle).
There's also "Scroll" mode and "Scan" mode. Scroll mode allows you to right and left click to change between players, and Scan mode will change the player you're spectating every few seconds (you can set how long until it switches to the next person).
There's also an API, which allows developers to take control of the entire plugin.
To see a full list of everything you can do with Spectate, head over to the Commands page.
Spectate has undergone a complete rewrite.
Please make sure your permissions are up to date, and please report any bugs on the tickets page.
Spectate 2.0 is here!
2.0 includes:
- A complete rewrite of the entire plugin from the ground up.
- Lots of bugs fixes!
- Spectate is now compatible with Multiverse Inventories.
- A fresh new API that lets developers control the ENTIRE plugin!
And some new features:
- A new spectate angle, Third Person Front mode! Now you can watch the player you're spectating while looking at their face. What more could you ask for?
- Another new spectate angle, Free Roam mode! Now you can walk around like a ghost while still viewing their inventory. Spooky!
- You can now see the gamemode and XP of the player you're spectating!
- If you were invisible before spectating, you will still be invisible when you stop spectating.
And many more features I forgot to write down!
So what are you waiting for? Download the plugin for the complete Spectating experience today!

Posted Jul 6, 2012Some commands like /suicide and /gm cause item dupes. Could their be an option to disable commands while spectating someone?

You can type /spectate mode 2. This will put you in the scroll mode, and now you can start spectating in scroll mode by typing /spectate. Left clicking and right clicking will now scroll through everyone on the server.
@FordRacer2007
Yes, I'll add that as an option in the config for the next update.

Posted Jul 5, 2012Hey, I have a feature request. Could you please add an option to negate the spectating of players in certain worlds? I'd like to prevent everyone from spectating people in the creative map because together with Multiverse Inventories, it's causing the spectator to lose their inventories when the player in creative mode leaves the server. In other words, i'd like for the spectator to get an error saying that the member is in "worldname" and cannot be spectated there. Thanks!

Posted Jul 1, 2012That isn't what Farrows meant at all.
Hes not talking about using it as an admin spy tool. Hes talking about letting the community use it as a "come and look what im doing right now" tool. Where player A sends a request, and player B has to accept it. So no spying business. Then player B can end the spectating session. I suppose this is quite a good idea. Then there can be an admin permission to *secretly spectate* and override the requesting thing.

Posted Jun 29, 2012I think farrows meant Announce only for OP's?
so if another op spectates another player - others OPs can see. I also wouldn't recommend giving everyone the option to spectate.

Do you think it is a good idea to give the spy - *sorry* spectate - permission to everyone? And is it a good idea to announce it to everyone when someone spectates? I think this plugin is made to spectate someone without he/she is noticing that :)
I would rather put a comment to the console, not send it to every player. Another thing could be a permission that enables broadcasting it to all players with this permission :)
When it came out that I'm running this plugin on my server, most players complained why I would spy them so they tried to force me to uninstall it. What I want to say with this is at your place, I would try to hide it away because maybe they fell offended if you are seeing all their stuff.
Hope I could help you

Posted Jun 26, 2012This plugin is great, however, personally I would like to have two features more.
Announce when other player is spectating other, and also have a feature to not announce it (like when I am checking if one's griefing other one). Right now only two people have the permission to use spectate, but I would like to give it to everyone in the server. But I cannot do it, if it doesn't announce it, since it would be spying more or less.
Ask player to accept the spectating. So that you could actually stop other one from spying / looking your stuff. This could be easily achieved by changing "spectate.cantspectate" permission's truth value by player himself.
Just asking. It's possible that these ones were already asked, but I didn't have the time for read all the comments. Thank you! A good plugin!

The first request I've already started working on, should be in 1.9 or 1.10.
As for the second request, I think that arm animation is client sided, but I'll see what I can do... I may add some extra features for players using spout.

Posted Jun 26, 2012Feature requests: Just a few ideas of some features that would be cool!!!! - Control other players. If this is possible? Maybe block their users input, and make their player move the same way it spectates? as if they are spectating you. - Animations? Is that possible to make the arm move? - Spout intergration to show their skin instead of yours? (Just a cool feature for when recording) - Scroll the inventory when they do. If this is possible. Just another helpful thing for when recording :P Maybe spout?
@Marium0505
I reported that dupe plugin and it has now been removed :) +50 Brownie points :3

FYI: The inventories are seperated by Multiverse-Inventories

Nice idea but I think this causes a very high server load because Spectate would have to render the pictures like minecraft (with texture pack and effects, you surely know). Like it works now, it basically ohny makes the visitor invisible and frequently teleports him/her behind the target. That is not as much work as it would be to render the screens completely :)
I already said that, but it's a good idea! :)

Posted Jun 20, 2012hey i've found a VERY small bug. when you're spectating someone who's sprinting, the normal particle effects around their feet are replaced with smoke. it's not a major thing at all, just thought i'd mention it.
I love your work; it's an essential tool to my server's success. the Griefers don't know what's hit 'em :)
also, a small suggestion. there was talk about it spinning through player views on a second PC. why not instead make it tie-in with Pail or some other server manager? so like you could have a tab with small screens for each online player showing what they're doing. don't know if it's possible, but it'd be really cool :)
