Ok everyone plugin has been updated to 1.0 to current bukkit so go download version 1.0 of hitcounter
Original Author zachooo and have permission from him to take over this plugin from him
HitCounter - The How Many People Have Joined Your Server?:
The function of this plugin is to count how many people actually logged in your server. So if 1 person logged in it would say [hc] hitcounter: 1 and if another person logged in it would say [hc] Hit Counter: 2 and so on
Version: v1.1.1 This is a very simple plugin that allows you to track how many people have joined. This does not track IP's so it will add one whenever a player joins no matter what.

Color Codes
&0 = Black
&1 = Dark_Blue
&2 = Dark_Green
&3 = Dark_Aqua
&4 = Dark_Red
&5 = Dark_Purple
&6 = Gold
&7 = Gray
&8 = Dark_Gray
&9 = Blue
&a = Green
&b = Aqua
&c = Red
&d = Light_Purple
&e = Yellow
&f = White[list]

why not just get the plugin to go to default world folder/players/ and count the .dat files return an integer and that's how many players have joined your server
