What I would like to see here is a more RPG'esque style to the guards.
ability to equip them and the need to repair them over time and such. Give one a bow and it becomes a ranged defender (have to restock it's arrows and such ability to use arrow mods would be nice) give it a heavily enchanted diamond sword if you like and watch it reap the harvest lol. [can't have golems equip swords and bows, but attack damage could be modified]
basically a basic guard unit shouldn't be all powerful or even close but you should be able to upgrade it over time as you gather more resources and such. hook it into player city/stronghold creation and limit it to protecting only in the city or strongholds area of influence. so many possibilities. I also like the guild/clan idea too hehe.
