Better Snow
Better snow
Description
This plugin basically allows snow to "go through" leaves and set on leaves that are under and on ground under trees.

Features
- When snowing, the snow placed on leaves will be placed under as well
- Automatically places snow under already-placed snow on leaves
Installation
- Download jar and place it in your plugins folder. (http://wiki.bukkit.org/Installing_Plugins)

Source code
Source code is, as always, in the jar file.
Change log
See changelog in the download for now, I'll put up a full changelog once it's out of beta.
To do list
- Improve performance
- More options for snow gap filling: on chunk load (current behaviour), slow and constantly always, slow and constantly only when it snows
- Add configurable chance to drop snow whenever snow is mined with a shovel
- Add configurable blocks that shouldn't have snow on them
- Add configurable blocks that should allow the snow to 'pass through'

I see... I hope they're detectable via Bukkit... are those the items with X<number> names ?

That'll seriously complicate things... but what blocks would you have in mind ?

Posted May 9, 2012Could we perhaps have a config file within which we could specify which blocks snow can 'fall' through?

Yeah I could but I'm afraid that the shadow glitches make it look really ugly in this MC version and in future versions I hope they make the snow grow by default... I'll do some tests tough.
Also, I could add a option to make snow disappear/decrease when stepped on.

Posted May 5, 2012You should make snow gradually build up (using its extra damage values) so it looks more realistic.

Yes, that's why I told Hawkfalcon that it's more realistic than vanilla Minecraft snow, and it can't be realistic in 100%, because it will look weird. ;)

Posted May 1, 2012About the snow blocks, I don't know what I was thinking about the full-size snow blocks... but yeah, I could add that drop option so snow drops snow.
@IIIeeCode I think I will add a task (that will be optionally be ran alltime or only while it's snowing... to simulate snow "falling" from the leaves above) that searches for snow on top of leaves and then searches below to fill the gaps.. which is what this plugin automatically does to all chunks whenever they load, but the task will be much slower but with some improved performance.
For the more realism part, it would look weird with 4 snow missing near the trunk :/
@imilkywayz Not anything, only features that improve the snow :P
EDIT: Actually... I have another older plugin that automatically grows long grass on grass in forests and some small amount of flowers, etc, makes wonderful enviroment... I could merge it with this one instead of releasing 2 separate plugins because it will be better performance-wise... thoughts ?

Posted May 1, 2012Well the title is BetterSnow, so anything involving snow can be thrown into this plugin...

Posted May 1, 2012Awesome idea.
I will probably add this plugin to my server.
Proposition: Maybe add option to take care of new snow only (from snowfall) for people, who don't need instant change, and can wait for the snowfall (with a benefit of unaffected performance).
About realism: in real life, there is a small area of uncovered ground around the tree, but it's way smaller than what Notch did in Minecraft. It's closer to what this plugin do, rather than to the vanilla snow behaviour. ;)

Acctually it's quite realistic seeing how snow rarely falls straight downwards. As it's usually windy snow comes from the side, which is why there sometimes is snow beneath the tree and on lower branches.
@THDigi Awesome plugin, will try it out now.

It takes a while to process the currently loaded chunks, it's still a early release and not fully optimized, bare with it a bit xD
@jhs232 I think there are plugins that already do that... but that's not my plugin's purpose at all, I want to it to make snowy forests more snowy.
@hawkfalcon
But the contrary, do a google image search for "snowy forest", most of the images are like my image :P

Posted Apr 30, 2012Here is an idea. Make it so you can also get snow blocks by mining snow. So that there is like 0.5% for getting a snow block when mining snow. % should be configurable.
