  • Warning: New Flash / Reader Vulnerability

    • By Kaelten
    • Jun 7, 2010
    • Category IconNews
    • 6

Today a new Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader exploit became public knowledge. It's actively being exploited, and we could all be targets.

    Quote:

Adobe has announced that an exploitable flaw in Adobe Reader 9.x, Acrobat 9.x, and Flash 9.x and 10.x has been discovered and is being actively exploited. Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux versions are all affected. The flaw allows arbitrary code execution by attackers, and hence it is deemed "critical."

Read the full article at ArsTechnica

The article linked provides some details on how to protect yourself. But in summary, there is no current fix from Adobe. Downgrading to Reader 8.x can save you there, and apparently updating to the latest 10.1 beta of flash can help, but that seems scary in it's own right.

If you don't have an authenticator already, we'd recommend getting one. Pick your flavor:

    • Physical Device (US Version)
    • They have an iPhone app for that.
    • Available on the Android Marketplace
    • Download for some US cellphones

    Be safe guys.

  • NVIDIA Users: Roll back from 196.75 drivers

    • By _ForgeUser1834
    • Mar 4, 2010
    • Category IconNews
    • 6

This is a pretty urgent thing to report because it could damage or potentially completely ruin your video card if it's ignored. The latest NVIDIA drivers, 196.75-WHQL released on March 2nd, 2010 are causing issues with the video card fan control while playing Blizzard (and other) games. This is caused by the Automatic Fan Speed feature being broken in the latest drivers.

The games included are: World of Warcraft, StarCraft II Beta and Warcraft III. If you play any of these games (which I'm pretty sure you do if you're reading this website), you'll want to roll your drivers back to earlier versions until this is fixed, unless you want to replace a video card within the next few days.

To find out what version drivers you're using:

    • Right-click on your desktop
    • Click NVIDIA Control Panel
    • When the Control Panel opens, in the bottom left corner there should be a "System Information" link; click this
    • Your Driver version should be in the Details portion
    Quote from Datth:

We're getting reports where users are getting intermittent low FPS after installing these drivers. It seems that it is related to the fan control included in these drivers not working correctly and is causing the video card to overheat on 3D applications. This will affect Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2 Beta. Please uninstall the drivers and revert back to the older ones.

  • Man in the middle attack compromises authenticators

    • Category IconNews
    • 5

Going to share this news with everyone. Kody over at World of Raids has said it the best so I'm just going to repeat what he's said over there.

Anyone who has an authenticator attached to their account should run a search (and probably an antivirus scan in case it's on the threat list already) immediately and ensure the file emcor.dll does not exist on your computer. This file is one reported to be allowing hackers to access World of Warcraft accounts that have authenticators attached to them. It's also possible there are other variations of these suspicious files, so if anyone has additional information please respond in the comments.

Based on this thread, the file may be found in /users/username/appdata/Temp. Since the file is fairly new (first mentions of it are only a few days ago), and the common source is unknown, I urge everyone to not log in to World of Warcraft or the account management site until you've run a scan. Confirm your computer is secure before using your authenticator, because this DLL file is allowing hackers to crack through it and access your account.

A warning sign that you're currently infected with this keylogger is that WoW will say your authentication code is incorrect, even if you know for sure you typed in the correct code. Thanks to Cameron for posting about this in our forums, too.

  • Curse.com Server Problems

    • 0

There seem to be some server problems with Curse.com.

This will affect Curse.com and it also seems Curse Client downloads.

CurseForge/WowAce do not seem to be affected, so as a developer you can continue to update addons.

For end users, if you wish to download addons you can access them from the project page (http://www.wowace.com/addons/arl/ for example). Click on the files tab and you can download from there.

The people who make things work are aware of the problem, and are working on it.

    Sorry for any inconvenience.

    Update

    From Adamar:

    http://clientsupport.curse.com/news.aspx?id=25

Update: The network issue has been resolved, and all services should be working properly again. We apologize for the inconvenience.

A network outage at a core router in New York City is currently preventing many Curse network sites and services from functioning properly, for people in certain parts of the world. We have contacted our data center, and they are looking into the issue now.

  • Beware of Phishing

    • By Funkeh
    • Jan 9, 2010

    • 12

A big deal lately with the security of wow accounts seems to be phishing. Fake whispers in-game are stating to show up nearly as much as gold advertising.

With the admitted leak of email addresses on the WarcraftRealms website earlier in December due to a security hole, you need to be more cautious as ever, as phishing email is now back on the rise. The email read:
    http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6051/wrealms.png

These people will stop at nothing to get your wow details, here is a perfect example of a classic phishing email:
    http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/8303/fakez.png

At first glance, this looks extremely authentic. Note that even the email originates from "blizzard.com" which goes against the in-game loading screen "tip" of trusting emails with such extensions. Infact the only give away that this is a phishing email is when you hover over the link, you can see it forwards to a non-blizzard website, an attempt to steal your account details.

I see people frequently say things like "My computer is secure". That may be fine and dandy, but did you ever stop to think about the security of websites out of your control? The truth is, you just can't guarantee this security. So here's a few tips:

    • Keep your wow password unique, do NOT use the same password anywhere else.
    • Double, even triple think about entering your login details anywhere.
    • Buy an authenticator, you won't regret it. The peace of mind it will bring you far outweighs any downsides. Also, I know you want that cute pet.

Recently we became aware of a needed change in how we've been handling payments to international authors.

While we'll still not need to withhold anything, we do need to start collecting a W-8BEN for any Non-US Citizen who wishes to redeem more than $600 worth of points a year. More information can be found [[kb:store/tax-information/|here]] and [[kb:store/international-taxes|here]].

Nothing has changed for US Citizens. We still need a valid W-9 on file if a US Citizen wishes to redeem more than $600 worth of points a year. More information regarding this form can be found [[kb:store/domestic-taxes|here]].

I hope that these knowledge base pages will help people understand more about why we need these forms and how to get them to us. If there are any concerns or questions we'll do our best to address them.

  • Curse Client v4 (PC) - Early Access Beta

    • By Adamar
    • Sep 3, 2009
    • Category IconNews
    • 59

I am very proud to announce the official launch of Curse Client v4 Early Access Beta!

    The New Client is Born

After the launch of Curse Client 3.0, we began taking notes on the most frequent user requests, complaints, and general feedback. The result of this feedback is version 4. In development since May, version 4 of the Curse Client has been redesigned from the ground up. Written in C# and utilizing Microsoft WPF technology, the Curse Client now sports a modern user interface and an entirely new set of features.

    • AddonSync - Keep your addons in sync across multiple game installs and computers. Backup and restore addon settings, automatically.
    • UI Wizard - Create your own UI packs, and share them with your friends.
    • Addon Icons - All addons now have icons for better identification and visual feedback.
    • Integrated Bug Reporting - To assist authors in identifying issues and handling feature requests, the new Curse Client now includes an integrated bug reporting module.
    • New Scanning Technology - Checking for addon updates now only takes a couple of seconds, and uses a fraction of the CPU as version 3.
    • Small Memory Footprint - The new client has been optimized to fit within a tiny 1 to 3 megabyte footprint (when idle) and 1 megabyte when trayed.
    • Better Customization - Choose the information you want to see in your addons list, the number of simultaneous downloads and even your UI theme (two in beta, with more to come).
    • Better Searching - Search addons by name, category and author, instantly.
    • Better Security - The Curse Client is now digitally signed by VeriSign to ensure authenticity. Additionally, all client-to-server communication has been secured with HTTPS-level encryption.

Below are instructions for how you can get into the early access beta, as well as screenshots showcasing the new client.

A native, Cocoa-based Mac client has also been in development, and will soon be entering beta.

    Installing the Beta

Simply download the installer from http:clientupdate.curse.com/setup.exe and run it. The installer will verify a compatible version of .Net is on your computer, and update it if necessary. Depending on what version of .Net is installed on your computer, this process can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes.

How to Report Bugs & Feedback

Please report all bugs using the integrated bug reporting tool. This will automatically include a snapshot of the Curse Client log data, as well as your operating system information. We're excited to hear what you think about the new Curse Client.

  • WoW 3.2.2 on the PTR

    • By Ackis
    • Aug 18, 2009
    • Category IconNews
    • 1

3.2.2 is now on the PTR. Patch notes are as follows:

    General

    • The Brood Mother Returns
      • After years of lurking in her lair battling the many brave adventurers who travelled from afar to challenge her, Onyxia returns to commemorate World of Warcraft’s five-year anniversary.
        • Onyxia has been scaled to offer new challenges to level 80 players and is now available for testing in 10- and 25- player modes.
        • Adjustments have been made to the encounter to keep it fit for modern raiding, but the fundamental experience of fighting the Brood Mother will remain, as will the horror of the Deep Breaths!
        • Some classic items Onyxia offered level 60 players will have their stats adjusted appropriately for level 80 players.
        • Brood of Onyxia, a very rare 310%-speed mount modeled after Onyxia herself will be available for the luckiest of challengers.
    • Copied Test Realm characters will no longer be copied with their achievement history in order to better facilitate the character copy process.

    Death Knights

    Pets

    • Gnaw: This death knight ghoul ability now has a 1-minute cooldown.

    Druids

    Talents

    • Balance
      • Moonkin Form: This form now also reduces the damage the druid takes while stunned by 15%.
      • Typhoon: The knockback distance from this spell has been increased to match Thunderstorm.
    • Feral Combat
      • Predatory Strikes: This talent now also causes the druid’s finishing moves to provide a 7/13/20% chance per combo point to make the next Nature spell with a cast time below 10 seconds instant cast.

    Mages

    • Arcane Blast: The buff from using this ability now stacks up to 4 times instead of 3, and each application increases mana cost by 130% instead of 200%.

    Talents

    • Arcane
      • Missile Barrage: The effect from triggering this talent now removes the mana cost of Arcane Missiles. In addition, the chance for Arcane Blast to trigger this talent is now 8/16/24/32/40%. All other listed spells continue to have a 4/8/12/16/20% chance to trigger it.

    Paladins

    • Righteous Fury: The bonus threat from Holy spells caused by this talent has been reduced from 90% to 80%.

    Talents

    • Protection
      • Judgements of the Just: The reduction in cooldown to Hammer of Justice provided by this talent has been reduced to 5/10 seconds instead of 10/20 seconds.
      • Touched by the Light: This talent now provides 20/40/60% of the paladin’s strength as spell power instead of 10/20/30% of the paladin’s stamina.
    • Retribution
      • Seal of Command: This ability now chains to strike up to 2 additional targets when it is triggered by an attack.

    Rogues

    • Fan of Knives: The damage done by this ability has been reduced by 30%.

    Talents

    • Combat
      • Throwing Specialization: This talent no longer causes Fan of Knives to interrupt spellcasting.
    • Subtlety
      • Honor Among Thieves: A 1-second cooldown is now enforced on how often a rogue can gain combo points from his party via this talent.

    Dungeons & Raids

    Shadowfang Keep

    • Wailing Guardsman: Screams of the Past will no longer have multiple applications on a target. Recast time has been increased.

    Items

    Glyphs

    • Glyph of Mind Flay: This glyph no longer reduces the magnitude of the movement reduction on the Mind Flay victim.

    User Interface

    • The size of the Focus Frame can now be adjusted via the Interface Options menu.
    • For additional notes on Lua and XML changes please visit the UI & Macros Forum: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board.html?sid=1&forumId=11114

    Bug Fixes

    • Balance of Power: Misleading tooltip reworded. The tooltip previously reported an incorrect value for the increased chance to hit with spells. The actual benefit of the talent is unchanged.
    • Divine Aegis: Ranks 1 and 2 now work with Holy Nova.
    • Trap Mastery: Tooltip now states the correct amount of snakes summoned.

  • Curse Client 4.0 Sneak Peak (updated July 24)

The development team here at Curse has been hard at work on the Curse Client 4.0.

Crunch Gear was given a sneak peak at the newest alpha client, 4.0. It's been entirely rewritten to optimize performance, speed, and usability. Of course it's going to pack in some new features as well. It's only in Alpha so we can only share this screen shot of the updated UI.

I (Kaelten) also wanted to take the opportunity to post a screenshot of our upcoming mac client. Our mac users are important to us, and as a result most of my time has been monopolized by working on the new v4 Mac client. It's a completely native Cocoa app targeting 10.4 and will run on both intel and PPC macs. It's not as far along feature wise as the windows client, but again, I did want to make sure people know that it is actively being worked on.

For clarification the Windows one is the dark one, where the mac client is the silver one.

    Mac Update 7/24

I just updated with an extra screenshot from today's alpha release. So please check it out. I hope you guys agree it's starting to come together. :)

    • 1

Over the past month, there have been many enhancements to the site. Here's a quick list summarizing the major changes:

    • Search enhancements. Yes searching will no longer suck, there have been substantial enhancements in the searching algorithms to make search results more accurate.
    • Private messaging system. Some of you may have noticed the private messaging system on up the top right. You can now message other users on the site.
    • Rendering optimizations. There has been a lot of changes to the back end to allow for faster rendering of the site, themes and whatnot.
    • Addition of experimental projects. If you want to try something out, you can now request experimental status. Projects won't syndicate, but it allows you to try out new ideas.
    • Addition of themes to the site. You can now customize how the site looks and feels.

There's a few new changes coming down the pipe. There was a [[announcements:curse-client-4-0-sneak-peak|preview]] of the new Curse Client released a little while ago, plus there are a few other nifty features which I can't talk about now.

    Hey beautiful people, ckknight here.

There has been some hub-bub about project approvals recently and one way we figured that we could help on the backend side of things is to introduce the concept of experimental projects. If you have a cool idea but nothing fleshed out, your project is best considered "experimental". This is especially true for libraries. Many of the best libraries out there have a lot of rehashing, discussing, even without much in the way of code. Previously, a lot of projects (especially libraries) were left in a limbo state where this should fill that gap.

You can flag your project as experimental when creating, or it may be flagged for you by an administrator while in the approval queue.

If you flag your project as experimental:

    • It will not sync to Curse.com
    • Unless it violates the terms of service or is plagiarism, it is likely to be accepted.
    • You will be able to use all the features of a normal project, including repositories, pages, etc.
    • Once a release file is uploaded (or created through the packager), it will be flagged as needing standard approval.

At any time, you may resubmit your project for approval to make it a non-experimental project.

  • Author Store is Launched!

    • By ckknight
    • Jul 2, 2009

    • 14

Woo, the day has finally come when the author store is launched. A lot of hard work has been put into this, both on the technical end and on the business and legal side of things.

You can visit it at https://store.CurseForge.com/.

If you redeem an item, you won't receive it immediately. For the first little while, I'll be going through and approving all the redemptions manually, just to make sure everything's running smoothly.

In case you didn't read the previous announcements, in order to receive points which can be redeemed at the store, you must have an addon which has over 100 installs (as determined by the Curse Client).

The author rewards program is our (i.e. Curse, Inc's) way of rewarding our content producers which create incentive for users to subscribe to Curse Premium. 20% of all Curse Premium revenue goes directly into the Author Reward Program. This is our thank you for all your hard work.

Addons receive author reward points based on their popularity as determined by the Curse Client. Due to the amount of addons out there and the vast diversity, even the most popular addons only receive a few percent of the total pool, so don't give up hope. There are a few other details, but that is the main statistic. We feel that that provides the best relation as to what users actually want who use our services. We don't want to reveal all the nitty-gritty details in order to prevent gaming the system. If you do suspect gaming the system by someone (e.g. trying to actively manipulate statistics, uploading addons that aren't theirs, etc.), please report it. We want to reward those who actually deserve it, not those who think that they're crafty.

As a side note, everything store-related as well as standard logins now use HTTPS for security reasons.

    Hey there, ckknight here.

I've been slaving over the keyboard for the past few days getting some cool features in that I hope a lot of you will appreciate:

    • Private Messaging
      • Previously, there wasn't any real good way of sending a message to another user on the site, hopefully this will help that out. Please provide constructive feedback if you can.
      • You can PM more than one person at a time. You can also specify people as CC (like in e-mail).
      • This is a proper conversation system rather than a one-off messaging system, so if you message back-and-forth, it's all properly grouped together.
      • Indicator in the top-right showing what you have and have not read.
      • If you receive any spam, report it (button in the bottom-right of the page) and it will be dealt with harshly and as quickly as possible. Banning people is easy and it properly deletes all their content.
    • Signatures on comments
      • You can now specify comments that you post to have a signature. You can set this on your profile
      • By default, you will see one signature per user per page.
      • For those who don't like signatures, you can easily turn these off at Edit settings in your profile
    • Attachments on comments, pages, and themes
      • Previously, attachments were only available on tickets. This has been expanded to allow attachments on themes (if you want to include your own images or logos or whatever), pages, and comments. This has been sorely lacking, as sometimes it's very nice to upload a file or two as part of a conversation.
      • If this is abused, just report the abuser. If widespread abuse occurs, more restrictions may be put in. (But hopefully it won't come to that.)

Many people have very specific likes, and some people (like those with eye problems) have very specific needs. I think it's important to try to give a way for everyone to be able to use the site.

There are some very hard realities. We're not the greatest designers. At times we can bust our asses for days and be lucky to have something the won't make you run in terror. We're also under a very heavy workload and have a lot going on, and there is only two of us. So please keep in mind that the new design isn't really the target end point it's a stopping point into perfecting the main designs.

Approximately 25% of the users have voted a dislike for the new theme, with only about 17% showing a strong dislike. That's understandable.

For these reasons we've brought a theming system into the mix. It's currently not possible to replicate the old theme 100%, but it does give you a lot of control over the look of the website. The corners, the paddings, the fonts, and the colors, and more. We're also open to working with people to get more power added to the theming system so that their needs and wants can be met.

I'm hoping that as time goes by we'll be able to see an amazing set of templates that will provide to the needs of all of the users.

So I apologize to the people who are hating the new theme and want something different, or just the old one. However, I do thank you for all of the feedback and the honesty with us. Please keep it coming.

    Hey beautiful people, ckknight here.

I've been working on the revamp of CurseForge for a long time now, and I've gotten to the point where I'm comfortable launching it as the main site.

This is the largest change to happen to the codebase since WowAce moved from its old technology to the new CurseForge-based one.

Apart from the following, many, many bugs were fixed in the process.

    • There are gradients and rounded corners now. This provides a feeling of weight to the widgets on the page. (also: I'm pretty sure this makes us Web 2.0)
    • New color scheme for WowAce and CurseForge (though they do borrow some shades from the old).
    • Widgets are more spread out than before, allowing an easier eye-travel path.
    • Streamlined pages where every page of the same type (e.g. details, listing, main page, edit) have the same feel, rather than differing from page-to-page.
    • Many various layout fixes.
    • Improved form layout, as you can see on http://www.wowace.com/create-project/
      • the most important field (Project name) is larger
      • icons show where they make sense, e.g. on the categories and languages.
      • Many-to-many editing pages are far, far easier to use. Examples would include project membership assignments.
    • Tab-based navigational interface instead of a pseudo-tabbed interface or dropdowns.
    • Visible user actions in the upper-right corner of every page, this replaces any dropdowns that the user might experience.
    • Easy to access, but hidden by default, admin actions, below user actions. This would appear only if a user has special rights to an object.
    • Listings: (good example: http://www.wowace.com/projects/pitbull4/tickets/)
      • Much more advanced filtering system
        • Icons in some filters
        • More advanced filters in most cases
        • Date-based filters
        • Per-page specification (if you are an author or QA person and want to see all the tickets on one page, you can. This is limited to authors so that the database doesn't become overloaded unnecessarily.)
        • Bulk editing is a lot cleaner and easier. This is used for ticket management.
      • Better visibility of sorting and pagination
      • Heavy use of icons for graphical feedback.
      • Create links on the top-right. e.g. On the projects listing, "Create project" shows up. On a tickets listing, "Post a ticket" shows up.
    • Use of openable widgets, e.g. post a comment. Instead of seeing a big white box before all comments, you click "Post a comment" first.
    • Contests system, for if we have code contests (which we just finished one), or image-based contests (if we want a logo contest or something along those lines). (http://www.wowace.com/contests/)
    • Theme system, which handles the styles of a site, where each site has a separate theme, but users can create their own themes and post them for others to use. (http://www.wowace.com/themes/)
      • This is very powerful and will allow custom theming of sub-sites (e.g. atlasmod.com or support.curse.com) very easily.
    • Greater consistency for posting. Previously, the "Preview" of a post might look very different from the final result, now, they look exactly the same in both situations.
    • Due to the hidden admin actions, more actions can be placed inside. On a project, the mainline repository is far more accessible because of this. Many authors had issues figuring out what was possible before, but this alleviates most worries.
    • Categories have all been given icons. This was mostly in anticipation for the upcoming Curse Client 4.0, but it's also adopted on the new CurseForge as well. Everywhere a category would show, its icon shows now. (Eventually, Curse.com will sync these icons as well.)
    • Comments
      • banning options have been added to make it easier to fight The War on Spam.
      • direct linking of comments now provide links that will work regardless of pagination.
    • Users now have all their IP addresses tracked, rather than just one. This will allow us to better track gaming of the system, but mostly for spammers.
    • Sites have much better management, so that if we want to launch a new site based on CurseForge tech or change an existing site, this is very viable. This will become more prevalent later, if we launch a non-addon site (since CurseForge's technology is a very good project management system), a ticketing-only site (perhaps for support.curse.com or potentially other sites), or for authors to host a site with us based on one or more of their projects (e.g. atlasmod.com).
    • Implemented a data caching system. This should make page loads quite a bit faster overall, but their shouldn't be any horrible invalidation issues (here's hoping).
    • Set up for localization of the whole site. Every string is properly wrapped, but it doesn't hook into the localization app yet. That is low-priority and a few months off, after some more important things are taken care of.
    • Implement CCIP support (used by Curse Client 4.0). On files pages, there is a "4.0 Install" button in the top-right. Once CC 3.0 supports CCIP, the standard psyn links will be replaced with CCIP links.
    • Add icons to projects, as specified by the project owner.
    • When hovering over images that have been shrunk down, show the full image in a popup. (e.g. http://www.wowace.com/projects/)
    • When making a large comment, the textarea size will expand as you make more lines.
    • For search boxes, add an eyeglass icon as well as a grayed out "Search" text.
    • More Semantic HTML, which should help Search Engine Optimization (SEO) a bit.

  • E-mail from Curse regarding password reset

In the past day or so, some people have reported getting an e-mail stating it is from Curse regarding a password reset. The mail looked something like:

Your CurseID password has been reset. To login, simply enter your username or e-mail address and the following password:

We encourage you to change this password as soon as you login.

Your e-mails have not been stolen/hacked, and this was not a fishing attempt. It was a template for the password reset sent by curse, and was sent inadvertently by the bulk mail provider for Curse.

Your passwords have not been reset.

  • Author reward points, one month in

    Hello friends, ckknight here.

We've been calculating points for the author rewards program for one month now. The numbers we had been using to give points was based on an estimate, which, after one month of business, has turned out to be a bit of an overestimate. You may notice that points generated are less than before, because of this.

We expect that, over time, the amount of points will increase as the Curse Premium becomes more popular (likely when the next WoW patch arrives).

I know it's a bit shocking, but authors had been getting roughly 40% of the Curse Premium revenue, now it is dropped to its previously declared 20%, though it is possible that this number may raise over time, mostly dependent on how popular Curse Premium becomes.

Any questions or concerns (from authors) can be addressed in comments to this announcement or by joining us on IRC on irc.freenode.net at #CurseForge. I (ckknight) should be able to field any questions.
